All life on the planet is connected. Everything we do has an impact, from the foods we eat to the products we buy. Many people don't often stop to think about how their choices affect other living beings and the environment.
Modern factory farms have a negative impact on the environment. Pollution, pesticides, and the sheer volume of water used on factory farms are just some of the issues. In addition, it is estimated that "Twenty vegetarians can be fed on the amount of land needed to feed one person consuming a meat-based diet ("Vegetarian Fact Book", AAVS).
In 2006, the United Nations Food & Agriculture Organization released a Report which shows the connection between animal agriculture and global warming. According to Henning Steinfeld, Chief of FAO’s Livestock Information and Policy Branch and senior author of the eport: “Livestock are one of the most significant contributors to today’s most serious environmental problems. Urgent action is required to remedy the situation.” (BiteGlobalWarming.org)
World hunger is a problem that affects much of the planet. According to the "Hunger Report 1993", Peter Uvin of Brown University World Hunger Program illustrated how a vegetarian diet can feed significantly more people than a meat-centered diet. Many poor & developing countries export grains and soybeans to the United States to feed the billions of animals raised for food, when in fact they could be using the grains to feed those that go hungry in their own countries.
