Society of PEACE Summer Movie Night & Vegan Bake Sale

Join us for our first Summer Movie Night & Vegan Bake Sale on Friday, August 22, 2008 at 7:00 PM!

We'll be showing a free screening of the educational film Sustainable Table at the Aurora Theater in Houston. This free event will begin at 7:00 PM. A Vegan Bake Sale will be held in conjunction with this event, with proceeds benefiting Society of PEACE. Plenty of vegan desserts, snacks & refreshments will be available.

Friend of BARC and Cooper Clinic are hosting another fun-filled monthly "Meet & Greet" event!

The Meet & Greet takes place on Saturday, September 6, 2008 in the Heights from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM (NEW SUMMER HOURS)! Meet homeless dogs and cats in need of loving families! All proceeds from the event will go to Friends of BARC, a non profit volunteer group, to purchase needed supplies for the city’s shelter animals.

You can also drop off donations for BARC anytime or at the Meet and Greet at Cooper Animal Clinic, 1136 Heights Blvd. This will be another great opportunity to meet shelter animals in need of a second chance.

Rally for Jenny the Elephant in Dallas

The Concerned Citizens for Jenny group will be holding a peaceful rally & press conference in Dallas on Sunday, July 27th at 1:00 PM. Join other activists in asking that Jenny the Elephant be sent to an Elephant sanctuary instead of being retired to live a lonely life at a zoo in Mexico.

"Learn how to be a Personal Chef" with vegan chef Pamela Kletke

Society of PEACE member Pamela Kletke (MBA, U of St. Thomas), a.k.a. “The Food Fairy,” has been a personal chef since 2005. Pamela is an organic gardener and teaches business classes at Houston Community College. She will be offering her personal chef class on Saturday, July 26, 2008 in the Heights from 9:00AM - Noon.

Pamela will teach how to set up your business (DBA, food safety certification, website, etc.) and receive cooking tips that will translate into happy customers and a good return on your investment. These cooking tips will compliment a meal that will be served throughout the class.

This class is being offered through Leisure Learning. The fee is $45 + $7 food/materials fee. Register for the class online here.

Demonstration at Vasquez Circus in North Houston

Join activists from PETA, IDA and other concerned citizens for peaceful demonstrations outside the Vasquez Circus in North Houston. The demonstration will begin at 8:00 PM on Friday, July 18th.

The Demo will take place at 4900 North Freeway in Houston. Volunteers should meet in the parking lot of the Fiesta between the EZ Pawn and the circus tent. Leaflets and signs will be provided, but feel free to bring your own!

Vegan Ayurvedic Cooking Class - "Vegan Barbeque Feast"

Ayurvedic specialist & chef Karuna Mayi will teach a three hour hands-on vegetarian cooking workshop that shows you how to prepare a delicious, healthy vegetarian meal based on the ancient holistic healing system of Ayurveda. The class will be held on Saturday, June 28 from 2:00 - 5:00PM at the Creative Life Center in Houston. Learn to prepare delicious recipes for Barbeque Tofu, Potato and Pea Samosas, Rainbow Rice, Walnut and Raisin Halava, Apple Chutney and Mango Lassi. All recipes are totally vegan!

Fiesta presents a Vegan Cooking Class - "Healthy Mexican Cuisine"

Personal vegan chef Staci Davis will teach a vegan cooking class called “Healthy Mexican” cuisine on Thursday, June 12, 2008. The menu is light, healthy and meat free! Enjoy Orange Serrano Cole Slaw, Mixed Veggie Enchiladas with Green Mole, Chipotle-lime Sweet Potato Fries, Chili Corn and Vegan Coconut Flan.

Vegan "Gluten-Free" Cooking Class

Leisure Learning Unlimited presents a "Gluten-free" vegan cooking class, featuring vegan personal chef and radio personality Staci Davis.

The class is Sunday, June 8, 2008 from 3:00 - 6:00 PM in Sharpstown area (59 SW Frwy at Fondren) in Houston. Learn to make pizza, pasta, bread and other goodies without wheat or gluten.

Friend of BARC and Cooper Clinic are hosting another fun-filled monthly "Meet & Greet" -- this month is the 2 year Anniversary event!

This month will be the 2 year anniversary event on Saturday, June 7 in the Heights from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm! Meet homeless dogs and cats in need of loving families! All proceeds from the event will go to Friends of BARC, a non profit volunteer group, to purchase needed supplies for the city’s shelter animals.

You can also drop off donations for BARC anytime or at the Meet and Greet at Cooper Animal Clinic, 1136 Heights Blvd. This will be another great opportunity to meet shelter animals in need of a second chance.

Public Hearing in Houston on overfishing and ocean protection

On Thursday, June 5, 2008, there will be a public hearing in Houston on the topic of overfishing, ocean protection and proposed aquaculture in the Gulf. Activists are needed to speak on behalf of ocean protection, as public support is needed. Citizens can silently show support by holding a sign or you can sign up to speak for three minutes.

Green Drinks Social in Clear Lake

The Natural Living Store will be hosting the first ever "Green" Drinks Social in Clear Lake. This is a gathering for "green" focused folks (environmentalism, vegetarian/vegan) who would like to network and meet up with other like minded people in the Clear Lake area, just south of Houston. Society of PEACE Members from the Clear Lake area will be attending and there will be free literature available. This is a great networking opportunity!
